Paleo Meals To Go Review



Do you ever go hiking, camping, or backpacking and want to take a healthy meal with you that tastes great?  Ty Soukup, the founder of Paleo Meals To Go might have just the solution for you.  His friend introduced him to the Paleo diet in early 2013, which totally transformed Ty’s life.  His energy levels increased, GI distress issues stopped, his skin and complexion improved, and his athletic performance improved dramatically. 

Ty found it easy to follow the Paleo diet while he was around town on his normal schedule where he had time to prepare meals, but he soon headed out on trips for work and pleasure.  It made following the Paleo Diet more difficult because he had limited resources and he usually ended up making them “cheat trips.” 

Ty was going on a backpacking trip near Aspen, Colorado in the summer of 2013.    Before the trip he went to REI and looked at his options for Paleo backpacking meals, but quickly realized that there weren’t any there.  Then he looked on his phone but couldn’t find any options online either.  He bought what was available at the time and on the first day of a multi-day backpacking trip, he started to pay the price.  That was the moment when he knew he wanted to help people by providing better options.

Together with his mother, Dawn Anderson, they formulated a wholesome and delicious combination of freeze-dried, gluten-free, grain-free, milk-free, and soy-free packs.  They are protein-rich and shelf stable so they will last for quite a while.  The packages are light weight so you can take them with you without the extra bulk. 

These packages are great for hiking or backpacking, military MRE’s, emergency food supplies, or even when you head out on business trips.  I know that it is nearly impossible to find great food while you are on the road.  Because there are so many fast-food restaurants, I tend to break down before I make it to a store to get a healthy alternative. 

I received several different packs to test out including the following:

All of the pouches are easy to use.  You simply open the pouches, which have a notch where you tear.  You take out the oxygen absorber from the pouch and throw it away.  You then reseal the pouch and shake it up to make sure the seasoning is mixed well.  Then you expand the bottom of the pouch and pour in some hot water.  Stir the ingredients really quickly and seal up the pouch for about 10-12 minutes.  One last stir and you are ready to enjoy your healthy Paleo meal.    Here is a breakdown of each product I tested. 


This is a tasty beef stew with beef, carrots, onions, mushrooms, celery, and spices.  It is 390 calories for the pouch and has 42 ounces of protein. 


This was my favorite meal that I tested.  It has chicken, broccoli, spinach, onions, mushrooms, green bell peppers, and spices.  It is 300 calories for the pouch and has 60 grams of protein.  That amount of protein will be great to help your muscles recover from a long day of hiking.


This pack has a great taste and is a basic white chili made with mainly white vegetables.  The main seasoning is cumin, which gives it a nice southwest flavor.  The ingredient list includes chicken, sweet potatoes, coconut sugar, mushrooms, cauliflower, green chili peppers, celery, and spices.  It is 310 calories for the pouch and has 40 grams of protein.


If you are looking for a sweet, healthy snack with no prep work needed, look no further than the Apex Fruit Snacks.  It is simply freeze dried fruit with no additives, preservatives, added sugars, oils, or sulfur. It comes with Bananas, mango, strawberries, pineapple, and blueberries.  It is 170 calories for the pouch and has 2 grams of protein and 42 grams of good carbs.

My biggest criticism, which is me being picky is that most of the packs have mushrooms.  I just don’t like the taste of mushrooms and the texture of mushrooms drives me nuts.  With that being said, I like that I can pour the bag of ingredients into a bowl and pick out the mushrooms.  Then I put the contents back into the pouch and continue to prepare my meal.  It’s an easy fix to my pickiness.

Pros:
Great tasting healthy meals

Protein rich
Convenient and light weight – easy to travel with
Long shelf life

Cons:
A little pricey for frequent use, but cheaper than many alternatives
